What is compounding?
Compounding is the preparation of a customized prescription and non-prescription medication. Compounding allows pharmacists to “custom-make” medications to meet specific patient needs.
For example, as prescribed by a physician, the strength of a medication can be changed to provide the exact dosage needed by the patient. The form of a medication can be changed, thus making it easier for the patient, particularly the elderly and children, to ingest. Flavoring can be added to make a medication more palatable.
Additives contained in many medications, such as dyes, lactose or starch, can be eliminated. This allows a patient's sensitivity to a particular additive to be removed from a given medication.
A variety of medications can be incorporated into a transdermal gel, which allows for the absorption of the medication through the skin.
